Obituary

Dr. Ronald Arthur “Ron” Walker, 80, of Ashland, passed away Sunday morning December 27, 2020 in the University Hospital’s Samaritan Medical Center of Ashland.

Ron was born in New Castle, Pennsylvania, son of late Arthur Henry and Helen Marie (Lapish) Walker. He was a 1958 graduate of Mt Jackson High School, PA. Ron received his Master’s in Education from Westminster College in New Wilmington, PA. He would begin his teaching career at Mohawk High School as an English Teacher and then moved on to be assistant principal and curriculum director for West Middlesex, PA school district. During this time, he would serve on the Mt. Jackson Volunteer Fire Department and would fondly tell his family his memories of serving as a volunteer fireman. He then would receive his Doctorate in Education from Penn State University and relocated to Ashland in the fall of 1978 to begin his tenure with Ashland College.

During his career at Ashland College, Ron would be a professor and later the Assistant Dean with the School of Education teaching Professional Development in the Master’s and Graduate Level curriculum. After 27 years at Ashland University, Ron retired in 2005 and was a consultant for the Ashland Theological Seminary and served on the Leadership Team for Pastors of Excellence and the Seminary Board of the Sandberg Leadership Center. Ron served for ten years helping design seminary programs for proper training of pastors. He served on the Muskingum Valley Presbyterian Calling Commission, helping train lay pastors. Ron was on the Commissioned Ruling Elders and Candidates for Ministry of Word and Sacraments for 10 years. During this time, he would serve on the North Central State Board of Directors for 6 years. During his service with the seminary, Ron was able to minister to many by pastoring churches in Shelby, Orrville, Dalton, Linden Road, and currently in Bellville, OH where he would lead
a Bible study class every Friday morning.

Ron was an avid Penn State “Blue Band” fan. He enjoyed boating on Lake Erie, travel to visit various lighthouses, especially Marblehead, and traveling to Lakeside and Bay Point. Ron was a member of the Big Band and All That Jazz Society of Ashland. He and his wife Cora were officers with the former Married Couples Dance Club of Ashland. Ron was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Ashland, where he was an elder, member of the Steven Ministries, and a Sunday school teacher. Most importantly, Ron was extremely proud of his children and granddaughters, attending all of their various
activities they participated in.

Ron is survived by his wife of 54 years, Cora (Ricker) Walker, to whom he was married July 16, 1966. One daughter Jennie (Dave Breitweiser) Walker of Columbus. One son John (Michelle) Walker of Ashland; two granddaughters Sarah and Alison Walker both of Ashland; one brother Lee (Nancy) Walker of Poland, OH; brothers in law John Long of Mt. Jackson, PA, Paul “Rick” (Loranna) Ricker of Ft. Wayne, Indiana, and 3 nephews and their families. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister Carolyn Long, and a nephew Shane Long.

Private family services will be at 12 P.M. Saturday January 2, 2021 in the First Presbyterian Church of Ashland with Rev. Dr. JoAnn Ford Watson and the Rev Dr. Matthew Lewis officiating. A Celebration of Life will be held in 2021 for Ron.

Ron, a life long friend to my late husband and I, as well as my children. Though he was a busy man, he always had time to give a listening ear, share words of wisdom, empathy and prayer. Our families had many wonderful times together filled with laughter and fun. And, oh my, what desserts he and Cora would come up with. So delicious! They made a great team. I shall miss you greatly, my friend. My deepest sympathy to my dear friend, Cora, Jennie, John and family.

Ron was a great friend to my father, Ed Galloway. No one could make my dad laugh like Ron. In fact, I never knew anyone who could laugh like Ron, and I will miss that greatly. I couldn't help but laugh, too. I think that Ron and my dad are having great discussions and lots of laughs in heaven together.

Cora and my mom are life-long friends. Ron, Cora, John, and Jennie visited our family when I was a child. It was always a lot of fun. My sister and I enjoyed playing with John and Jennie. Ron and Cora would also meet my parents at Lakeside, OH. I was able to be with them there, too. We all loved to be at Lakeside.

Ron was like an uncle to me. He advised me about graduate school. Ron encouraged me to chase after my dream of earning a master's degree to become a college instructor. Ron called me in July, after I defended my dissertation, to be one of the first to address me as "Dr. Galloway". I was honored.

Ron was a leader who sought to include everyone in the process of learning. He was quick to offer his help in any problem we faced at the University. He was a great instructor with a passion for discovering new ways to teach and for his students to learn. He was a committed Christian who helped many churches work through problems they were facing. I will miss my friend.

I was always happy to see Ron at the same events I enjoyed, especially musical ones. I will miss seeing him and send deepest sympathies to Cora.
