Merle D. Witmer, 83 of Ashland passed away late Sunday evening, September 27, 2020 in University Hospitals Samaritan Medical Center.
He was born on March 3, 1937 in Ashland, the son of the late Earl and Beulah (nee Piper) Witmer.
Merle graduated from Ashland High School, Class of 1955.
He married the love of his life the former Elaine Smalley on April 10, 1959.
Merle was self-employed most of his life as a carpenter and mason.
He was a devoted member of Trinity Lutheran Church where he was an usher on Sunday mornings for more than 50 years. Throughout his life, he was a devoted family man, always there for his children’s and grandchildren’s activities.
Merle is survived by his wife of 61 years, Mrs. Elaine Witmer of Ashland; one son, Jeff (Kathy) Witmer of Ashland; one daughter, Cindy (Ed) Duffey of Ashland; seven grandchildren, Luke, Lyndsay, and Chase Witmer, Dakota, Starrlynn, Jaida, and J.C. Duffey; and one sister, Carol (Ralph) Wertz of Ashland.
Merle is preceded in death by his parents.
Funeral services will be held privately for the family with Reverend Michael Koch officiating. Interment will be in the Ashland County Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Trinity Lutheran Church, Good Samaritan Fund, 508 Center Street, Ashland, Ohio 44805 or to a charity of the donor’s choice.
