Albert William Goad, 78, of Ashland, passed away Thursday morning, May 14th, 2020, at his home.

He was born June 23rd, 1941 in Johnston City, Illinois to James William Goad and Olvetta May (Heyduck) Goad.

Albert attended Southern Illinois University, receiving his Masters of Fine Arts with a concentration in sculpture.

He was hired as an art professor at Ashland University in 1966, where he spent the next 36 years on AU’s faculty, serving the last 20 years as the Art Department Chair.

On July 15th, 1968 Albert wed Sherrill Stauffer of Ashland and they helped foster several children in Ashland County before starting a family of their own with two daughters; Anna and Mary.

Albert was an active member of Heritage Baptist Church and loved gardening, cooking, collecting recipes, his four grandchildren, and watching McGyver on Friday Nights.

Albert was known for being incredibly kind and upbeat, and having a very sharp wit and humor. Right up until his final days he was still beating everyone in his family at Kings in the Corner and Rummikub.

Albert is preceded in death by his parents, his brothers Jimmy Goad of Johnston City, Ill, Gene Goad of Johnston City, Ill., Jerry Goad of Herrin, Ill, and Brother-in-Law Larry Tooley of Centrailia, Illinois.

He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Sherrill (Stauffer) Goad, his Daughters Anna Goad of Mansfield and Mary (Ben) Roby of Ashland. Albert had four wonderful grandchildren, Patrick, Lexus, Nevaeh, and Silas. He also had one great-granddaughter Ember Johnson. Al is also survived by his sister, Sarah (Goad) Tooley of Centralia Illinois.

The family is planning a Celebration of Life service at Heritage Baptist in Ashland at a date later this summer.

I just found out today that Albert passed away. I want to express my deepest sympathy. He was such a wonderful person and I will truly miss him! I looked forward to him visiting our office and was always impressed with his genuine kindness and quick sense of humor. I know he knew the Lord and rejoice that he is with his Savior, but for now, I will miss him...our entire office will. -Julie Raudebaugh.

Al and I worked together at AU for many years, he in the Art Department and me in the ACCESS program and later in the Dean's Office. I always appreciated Al's energy and his concern for his students and for his department. I remember his hard work on designing a new general education curriculum that included interdisciplinary courses, including An Audience for the Arts, which he co-taught with colleagues from music and theatre for several years. I have never forgotten the American Eight exhibit of abstract sculptures by noted artists such as Kenneth Snelson and Mark Di Suvero that graced the front lawn of the campus for many months; Al was a driving force behind bringing that fantastic exhibit to Ashland. I remember his artistic creativity in his own sculptures. His personal graciousness, kindness, and good humor left a mark on me and on many who had the good fortune to know him.
