I just learned of Mr. Spoon’s passing and was sad to hear the news. He was my concert and marching band high school teacher. I’m forever grateful to have known him. He helped shaped my life. As a sophomore, he saw something in me and provided a mentorship as a new field commander. This experience built my confidence and shaped me as a leader later in life. He had a passion for music and instilled that in his students. Thank you Mr. Spoon for all the wonderful band memories (and contagious laughter) and taking our school to state - the first ever!

I met Larry in Chester, NJ when his family lived there, 1963-1967? Our friendship lasted after the family moved to Ohio. We did lose touch as adults only to reconnect last summer at my 50th high school reunion in NJ. Larry and I had some wild times as kids. I will miss our conversations. My deepest regards to Larry's family. David von Borstell

Hi David, Thank you so much for writing your memories and condolences. My sisters and I were hoping to get in touch with you and others he had so recently reconnected with in New Jersey. We are so glad he had that experience. I think it was the only reunion he attended for his New Jersey high school. It meant so much to him to reconnect with you.

I was one of "Spoon's" fellow classmates at Ashland. I may have even accompanied one of his bassoon solos, but we sang together in our college choir. I remember his smile and his laugh especially. Once we stopped in at his family's home in Cincinnati as we traveled to the city for an OMEA convention. The memory that I remember best is when we "battled" over the boy soprano solo in Bernstein's Chichester Psalms. Larry wanted to sing it so badly in his falsetto voice, but ultimately Cal chose me. Ironically, that work was sung at Trinity Lutheran where he worked. It was so sad to hear of his unexpected death. The photo of him sitting in the pews looks so much like the guy I remember from our college years. The family has my sincere condolences.

Larry played bassoon in the Ashland College Symphonic Band in 1972-76 when I was Director of Bands. He was a marvelous musician and a great guy. My condolences to his family.
