Carolyn attributed her longevity to three things; reading books, doing puzzles, and playing bridge. She was an avid reader and became an enthusiastic and competitive duplicate bridge player in her seventies frequently winning. Gardening was another passion of hers. She was a member of the Garden Study Club of Ashland. Watching and identifying birds at her home in the woods brought her much enjoyment as well. Carolyn passed this love of nature onto her children and grandchildren. As an active and longtime member of the First Presbyterian Church of Ashland, she cultivated both faith and friends. She was also a member of the AA Sorority and Mother’s Club of Ashland, as well as numerous bridge clubs.
Carolyn was enthusiastic about seeing other countries and cultures around the world, and spending summers at the family cottage on Mullet Lake, MI where she was a member of the Mullett Lake Country Club. Her children were most fortunate to have their relationship with their mother evolve into a lifelong friendship. She will be remembered for her quick wit, her wonderful gift of friendship, and her optimism for life.
She is survived by three daughters; Gayle Christine (Fred) Weber of Cincinnati, Carolyn Diane Freer of Ashland, and Ellen Elizabeth (Marty) Jones of Mullett Lake, MI. One son; George Randolph “Randy” Freer, of Mullett Lake, MI. Seven Grandsons; James King, Charles Weber and Andrew Weber, all of Portland OR, Scott King of Boston, MA, Tyler King of Cincinnati, OH, Jack Jones of Philadelphia, PA, and George Freer of Seattle, WA. Three Great-Grandsons, her sister Nancy McCormick of Columbus, Sister-In-Law Phyllis Hire of Mansfield, and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband George on February 15, 1983.
