Carolyn Freer, 92, of Ashland, passed away Friday evening November 15, 2019 in the Kingston of Ashland. Loving wife and mother of four, Carolyn was born in Cleveland, April 5, 1927, the daughter of the late Milton Julius and Laurabelle (nee Resch) Herr. She grew up in Lakewood, then New London, OH. She attended high school at the Sullins Academy in Bristol, VA. She attended Denison University where she was a member of the Delta Gamma Sorority and graduated Cum Laude in 1949 with a BA in English. Carolyn met the love of her life, George Freer, at a Cedar Point dance club. They were married June 25, 1949. Together they owned and operated Hostettler’s Inc., an office supply, furniture, and gift store.

Carolyn attributed her longevity to three things; reading books, doing puzzles, and playing bridge. She was an avid reader and became an enthusiastic and competitive duplicate bridge player in her seventies frequently winning. Gardening was another passion of hers. She was a member of the Garden Study Club of Ashland. Watching and identifying birds at her home in the woods brought her much enjoyment as well. Carolyn passed this love of nature onto her children and grandchildren. As an active and longtime member of the First Presbyterian Church of Ashland, she cultivated both faith and friends. She was also a member of the AA Sorority and Mother’s Club of Ashland, as well as numerous bridge clubs.

Carolyn was enthusiastic about seeing other countries and cultures around the world, and spending summers at the family cottage on Mullet Lake, MI where she was a member of the Mullett Lake Country Club. Her children were most fortunate to have their relationship with their mother evolve into a lifelong friendship. She will be remembered for her quick wit, her wonderful gift of friendship, and her optimism for life.

She is survived by three daughters; Gayle Christine (Fred) Weber of Cincinnati, Carolyn Diane Freer of Ashland, and Ellen Elizabeth (Marty) Jones of Mullett Lake, MI. One son; George Randolph “Randy” Freer, of Mullett Lake, MI. Seven Grandsons; James King, Charles Weber and Andrew Weber, all of Portland OR, Scott King of Boston, MA, Tyler King of Cincinnati, OH, Jack Jones of Philadelphia, PA, and George Freer of Seattle, WA. Three Great-Grandsons, her sister Nancy McCormick of Columbus, Sister-In-Law Phyllis Hire of Mansfield, and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband George on February 15, 1983.

A Celebration of life will be Saturday December 7, 2019 at 12 P.M. in the First Presbyterian Church of Ashland with the Reverend Dr. JoAnn Ford Watson officiating. Friends may visit from 11A.M. to 12 P.M. at the church prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, the family request donations be made to the First Presbyterian Church of Ashland, 320 Church Street Ashland, OH 44805, Ohio’s Hospice LifeCare, 1900 Akron Road, Wooster, OH 44691, or a charity of the donor’s choice.
