Howard Leroy Harris, 83 of Ashland passed away, October 30, 2019 in his home with his family by his side.
He was born on November 8, 1935 in Ashland, the son of the late Arthur H. and Ruth (nee Plank) Harris.
Howard graduated from Ashland High School, Class of 1953. Following his graduation, he proudly served in the United States Army.
On August 5, 1960, Howard married the love of his life, the former Sally Bantz. He retired from John Deere where he worked as a mechanic. He was also employed for International, Donley Ford, and R and J Ag Supply for several years as a mechanic and truck mechanic.
Howard was a devoted member of Maple Grove Church of the Brethren where he served as a deacon and former trustee. Throughout his life, he enjoyed flower gardening and working in his yard and fishpond. Howard was his grandchildren’s biggest fan, never missing any sporting events they were involved in. He will be deeply missed by his family. Howard was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather.
Howard is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Mrs. Sally Harris of Ashland; two daughters, Joyce (Eric) Hylton of Shipman, Virginia and Janet Bright of Ashland; one son, Jeff (Becky) Harris of Ashland; three grandsons, Michael (Jessica) Harris, Brandon (Alyssa Leibolt) Harris, Ryan (Bethany) Steward; two granddaughters, Laura (Les) Campbell and Jennifer Lackey; eleven great grandchildren; one expected great grandchild due in January; and one sister, Evelyn (Darl) Swinehart of Ashland.
In addition to his parents, Howard is preceded in death by a granddaughter, Amy Hylton; and a sister, Dorothy Carpenter.
Funeral services will be held, Saturday, November 2, 2019 at 2:00 p.m. at the Maple Grove Church of the Brethren, 960 Township Road 964, Ashland, Ohio 44805 with Pastor Steve Keib officiating. Interment will follow in the Ashland County Memorial Park where the Ashland Veteran’s Honor Guard will conduct military honors. Friends may call two hours prior to the service from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the church.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Maple Grove Church of the Brethren.
The family would like to thank Hospice of North Central Ohio for their love and compassionate care for Howard during his final days.
