With profound sadness, we announce the passing of Deb, our loving and devoted mother - a friend to all whose lives she touched.
Debra Ann Kauffman, 62, of Ashland, passed away Saturday morning, September 21, 2019 at her residence after an arduous journey with laryngeal cancer, which she faced with tenacity, stubbornness, and grace.
She was born in Ashland, Ohio on September 1, 1957 to the late Arnold and Erma (Arnold) Poland and was a 1975 graduate of Mapleton High School. Deb married Carl G. Kohler on January 7, 1977 and soon began her life as a mother to three children. By 1979, she began operating a local tavern, the Wagon Wheel, for several years.
Beginning a new chapter of life on December 31, 1984, Deb was married to David D. Kauffman, who preceded her in death on August 3, 2000. In their years together, the two enjoyed riding motorcycles, the company of friends, listening to music, and the competition of playing cards.
Through the years, Deb was an avid gardener, loved to cook and considered herself a proud squirrel mom. She was known for having a beautiful smile that would light up a room and for having sparking baby blue eyes. In addition to her hobbies, Deb was a caregiver and loving support system for many. From offering shelter and kind words to tending to the needs of ailing family members - consideration and care were Deb’s guiding principles.
She is survived by her children, Vanessa Kohler of Mansfield, Jacob (Marquita) Kohler of Columbus, Katie Kohler of Athens, GA, and stepson, Lee Kauffman of Ashland; five grandchildren, Kaylee, Kierstin, Brody, Dutch and Kyleigh; a great-granddaughter, McKenna; one sister, Midge Rinard, and two brothers, David (Jane) Poland and Mike (Chrissy) Poland, and many dear friends, including former husband and best friend Carl Kohler.
She was also preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, Terry D. Poland and Steven P. Poland.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Friday, September 27, 2019, at Deb’s home, from 4 PM until 7 PM. For more details, call 419.289.2920.
The family suggests that memorial contributions may be made to the Hospice of North Central Ohio, 1050 Dauch Drive Ashland, Ohio 44805. Expressions of sympathy may be made to the family by visiting

Denbow-Gasche Funeral Home and Crematory is assisting the family with the arrangements.

Hi Carl, I am so sorry to see in the paper that your ex-wife died. I trust your grief will be normal. I wanted to share what the preacher in Ecclesiastes ( King David's Son ) say's. A good name is better than precious ointment; and the day of death than the day of one's birth. Ecc. 7:1 The reason for this Carl is that Debra Ann is with Jesus and has eternal Joy and Peace. How Wonderfull!!! I am still on E. Liberty since Aug. 1981. I sure miss the Garber crew. I saw some of the pics Debra has on facebook from my neighbors computer. Nice pics Carl. Please take Care and may your family console each other. Love in Jesus, Debbie Hamilton My father James Hamilton died this March 18th and my brother Jeff March 31st. Cancer and Car Wreck. I am OK with it. Dad was 86 and Jeff was 57. We must be patient here on earth than Glory for all who Love our LORD at our passing....
