Roberta Ann “Bobbi’ Gilmer 77, of Ashland, passed away early Friday morning, August 2, 2019 at her residence following an unexpected illness.
Bobbi was born in Wabash, Indiana on October 19, 1941 to the late Robert E. and Mary Ellen (Flinn) Miller. She graduated from Roann High School, Roann Indiana, class of 1959 and received her bachelor and master’s degrees in education from Ashland College.
She was an elementary school teacher for 30 years. She started her teaching career in Savannah before being hired by the Ashland City Schools where she taught at Arthur Street School. Her teaching career was interrupted when her husband Rev. Arden Gilmer was called to pastor the Pleasant View Brethren Church in Pennsylvania as they raised their family. When they returned to Ashland, seven years later, she resumed teaching elementary education for the next 27 years in Ashland City schools.
She was a member of the Park Street Brethren Church, worked with the Children’s Ministry, sang in the Choir and was a member of WMS. She was a member of the Delta Kappa Gamma Sorority, the Ashland City Teachers Association and served as a school representative. She also served on the Boards of Park Street School and the Ashland County Cancer Association. While living in Pennsylvania she was the pianist and choir director of the Pleasant View Brethren Church and formed the church’s first worship team. Her hobbies included counted cross stitching, reading, and being around people. She was a loving and supportive wife to her husband’s pastoral ministry and the events of her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Bobbi was known for her beautiful smile which would light up a room.
On January 27, 1962 Bobbi was married to Arden E. Gilmer, and the couple celebrated their 57th wedding anniversary this past January.
She is survived by her husband, Dr. Arden Gilmer of Ashland, three sons, John Gilmer of Ashland; Joe (Jacqueline) Gilmer of Tiffin; Jeff (Cindy) Gilmer of Greenwood, IN; eleven grandchildren, Ryan (Tessa) Gilmer, Amanda (Neil) Elkins, Daniel Gilmer, Shannon (Kyle) Harmon, Isaiah Gilmer, Nathaniel Gilmer, Aaron (Bryanna) Gilmer, Jared Gilmer, Elizabeth Gilmer, Elijah Gilmer and Hannah Gilmer; six great grandchildren and two sisters, Barbara (Randy) Swanson of Winona Lake, IN, and Kathryn Baker of Wabash, IN.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her daughter-in-law, Pamela Gilmer.
Funeral services will be held Thursday August 8, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. at the Park Street Brethren Church with the Rev. Nate Bebout officiating. Burial will be in the Ashland Cemetery. Friends may call on Wednesday, August 7, 2019 from 4:00 – 8:00 p.m. at the Denbow-Gasche Funeral Home. The family suggests that memorial contributions may be made to the Ashland Pregnancy Center, Park Street Brethren Church or the India Mission, in care of the Brethren Church National Office.
