On Wednesday, July 25, 2019, Joy Day, loving wife and mother of two children, passed away at the age of 77. Joy was born on August 25, 1941 in Defiance, Ohio to O.S. and Elizabeth McKitrick. She received her Bachelor degree from Bowling Green State University and her Masters degree from Wayne State University. Joy married James Rodney Day on August 12th, 1967. They raised their daughter Heather Day, and their son Brandon Day, here in Ashland, Ohio.
Joy was an active and caring member of the community. She was a high school teacher of U.S. history when living in Lincoln Park, Michigan, and a substitute teacher at Ashland High School. Over the course of Joy’s college years, Joy was a camp director. Ever enjoying the outdoors, Joy later led her daughter’s girl scout troop through years of camping and adventures. As her daughter grew up, Joy took on the role of acting director of Ashland’s Sweet 16 dance squad for two years. For over 20 years, Joy owned and ran Joy’s Dariland –the seasonal go-to for delicious treats on the north side of Ashland. As someone who liked to be active, Joy played in Ashland’s first women’s soccer program – goalie was her thing. One of the activities that Joy was well known for was her involvement with the Ashland High School Mock Trial team as its Director for 28 years. Over that time period, Joy led mock trial students to the State level competition 25 times, making Ashland High School a renowned mock trial powerhouse and generating multitudes of future debaters and lawyers in society. Joy was an active member of the First United Methodist Church and took part in the weekly Sunday School service. Over the past few years, Joy enjoyed being part of a group of women called the ‘Esoteric Club’ where members presented and discussed on selected topics. Throughout her life Joy’s family knew her as a fantastic cook, making exceptional meals passed down over generations and experimenting with new recipes and flavors. Joy’s family and friends will forever cherish all the wonderful times and memories they have shared with her.
Joy is survived by her husband, their two children and two grandchildren, Julia and Eric Madureira, and her two sisters Lynne Abbot and Pamela Harris.
