Betty J. Garnes, 97, formerly of Ashland, passed away Monday evening, June 24, 2019 at Genesis Hospice Care (Morrison House) in Zanesville, Ohio.

Betty was born in Ashland, Ohio on February 13, 1922 to the late Paul E. and Alma (Shanks) Witmer. She was a graduate of Ashland High School class of 1940 and received her bachelor’s in education from Ashland College in 1962.
She taught 3rd & 4th grades in the Mansfield City School System for 26 years.
She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Ashland.
Betty and her late husband Earl enjoyed playing golf together, were supporters of Ashland High School Athletics, especially football, and enjoyed attending the concerts at the Brookside Band Shell during the Summer Concert series.
On July 25, 1943 Betty was married to Earl R. Garnes Sr. at Parris Island, S.C. They were married for 70 years before he preceded her in death on August 8, 2013. She was also preceded in death by two sons, Earl R. Garnes Jr. and Paul W. Garnes; a grandson, Caleb Wright and her sisters, Glorene Kirkwood, Marilyn Harper and Carol Allyn.
She is survived by two daughters, Kim Brown of Lancaster, OH; Gail Collett of Mansfield, OH; three grandchildren, R.W. (Megan) Collett, Sonya Williams and Whitney (Chris) Wright; 8 great grandchildren, Richie (Brittney) Disbennett, Ashley Pletcher, Landon & Madeline “Maddy” Collett, C.J., twins Cooper & Cora and Cambri Wright and a great-great granddaughter, Oaklynn Disbennett.
Graveside services and burial will be held on Monday, July 15, 2019 at 11:30 a.m. at the Ashland Cemetery with the Rev. Michael Koch officiating. There will be no calling hours.
