Robbie and I were always getting into mischief as adolescent buddies. My "funniest" recollection (though not his, I'm sure) was the yellow jacket nest we teased in his back yard slate-stacked wall, which sent a hive of the ferocious bugs up both his pant legs. Robbie wildly danced across the yard whooping and hollering in terror...and, now sorry to admit, I laughed while standing there helplessly watching his flailing! His mother, Mabel, rushed out with a broom and proceeded to swat away at his pant legs in an attempt to extinguish the bees...but it only angered them more. We finally pulled Robbie's jeans off and sprayed him with the garden hose to drown and wash away what was left of the living ones. Welts for days for poor Robbie...and he was angry at me for a couple weeks for laughing at his torment. But he got over it.

He and I were also comrades during our days as members of Boy Scout Troop 507. Those twice monthly camping weekends kept us close for several years. We camped out frequently in his back yard and mine. Delivered the Plain Dealer morning newspaper on bicycles for a time at the crack of dawn (boy, that got old quick!). We drifted apart over time as people do. Life moves on. But I still remember him fondly and to this day still use his name as a Security Question answer on password-required websites when asked to "Name of your childhood best friend." I guess that would be the best tribute I could pay Robbie after all these years. Apart but never forgotten, Rest in peace, old friend. And deepest condolences to Mabel, Sara, and the family, during this time of sorrow.
