Pastor Sanford Carveth Mitchell, 77 of Ashland, Ohio, died Saturday, March 23, 2019 with his family by his side.
Pastor Mitchell was born in Columbus, Ohio, grew up in Mansfield, and graduated from Wittenberg University with a BA in history. Following studies at the Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary and the University of South Carolina in Columbia, S.C., Pastor Mitchell earned a Master’s in Theology from Hamma School of Theology in Springfield, Ohio, and a Master’s in American History from Bowling Green State University.
He served as pastor for four years at First Lutheran Church in Findlay, Ohio; for seven years at Zion’s Lutheran Church in Defiance, Ohio; and for 37 years at Trinity Lutheran Church, Ashland, Ohio. He served as Pastor Evangelist of the national Lutheran Church for 14 years and on the Board of Directors of Wittenberg University.
Pastor Mitchell served as adjunct professor of homiletics at Ashland Theological Seminary and professor of homiletics for the seminary consortium’s Doctor of Ministry program at Methesco Seminary in Delaware, Ohio. He is former editor of the clergy journal, Homiletics, which provides weekly sermon helps for the Unified Lectionary Series.
In Ashland, he spent 25 years as Chairman of the Personnel Committee for the YMCA. In 1991, Ashland Theological Seminary awarded him an honorary Doctor of Divinity degree.
In 1965, Pastor Mitchell married Judith Weber of Findlay, Ohio, who survives him. He also leaves sons Jeffrey Mitchell, his children Hannah and Nathan, and Rodney Mitchell (Megan) and their children Alexa and Reece; sister Kathryn Mitchell Taylor and her daughter Lindsay of Charlotte, NC; aunt Elizabeth Burrier and her daughter Beth, from Zanesville, Ohio. Pastor Mitchell was preceded in death by his parents, the Reverend Doctor and Mrs. Carveth P. Mitchell of Charlotte, NC.
Pastor Mitchell was known for his passion for serving his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and his deep love for his family and community. He enjoyed water skiing, fishing, and chopping wood for his wood-burning furnace, playing ping-pong or volleyball, and participating in spirited card games with his grandchildren who loved it when they could beat “Papa.” He had a love of and talent for music and played piano, guitar, banjo, and other instruments with groups at his various congregations. Pastor Mitchell – husband, father, brother, minister, and friend - will be profoundly missed.
A service to celebrate the life of Pastor Mitchell will be held Saturday, April 6, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. in the Trinity Lutheran Church with Reverend Dr. Eric Riesen officiating. Interment will be in the Maple Grove Cemetery in Findlay, Ohio. Friends may call Friday, April 5, 2019 in Jack’s Place at Trinity Lutheran Church from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.
